“My parrot is
screaming!
What do I do
about it??”
Parrots are extremely vocal animals. Which is one of the reasons people enjoy having them as pets. It can also be one of the reasons people decide not to keep them. Screaming can get very annoying and disrupt your life.
Before you get too excited and do something drastic (which most people do) take a quick step back and look at the situation. Parrots scream for a variety of reasons (excitement, fear, attention seeking, etc). Look for something that has changed in your household such as new people or pets, different hours, decor changes. Changes may be small to you but your parrot may take notice.
We used to have a Scarlet Macaw who every once and while would let out a blood-curdling scream at 5 am. After searching for a cause, I found that it only happened when we had visitors stay overnight. Small change to us, big change to the parrot. If, after you have examined any changes the problem persists, consider a visit to your veterinarian.
Birds are masters at hiding medical conditions. If you are still looking for answers, consider contacting someone knowledgable in bird behavior. They may be able to see something you can’t and give you individual advice based on your situation.
